Ah, the campfire is lit & nightfall has set once again. S'mores are on the menu tonight... Come sit, grab a stick & a marshmallow. While I share my real life encounter with a bear that I bear-ly got away from....
It was at some point in time between April & May I still lived in Florida. I had gone mudding/trail riding with one of my friends in his bronco. We had gone out deep into the trails through the forest. Time went by so fast & the subjects were always changing. Our autistic ADHD minds weren't ever quiet for long. I couldn't tell you how many hrs we were gone for nor how far we were away from the nearest town.
We had taken a break from driving got out & stretched our legs we were about 500 feet or so away from his bronco. We continued talking & then we noticed that up ahead there was a bunch of rustling in the brush. We stopped dead in our tracks & the silence was deafing outside of the noise made by the unknown. All of a sudden we seen two small black balls of claws, teeth, & fur pop out of the bushes maybe10-15 feet away from us at most. They were wrestling with each other not giving a second thought to their surroundings...
My friend grabbed my arm & we started backing away quickly. Adrenaline surged through me the moment I heard the momma bear roar & the sound of her tearing through the bushes trying to get to us had me scared shitless. I looked back to see her charging right at us. It felt like an eternity before I got to the the passenger side of his bronco. He was in front of me the entire time. I got into the bronco as quickly as I could. The black bear wasn't far behind, my friend had slammed his bronco into reverse. It still chased us for a few moments then turned back to its cubs.
He stopped a moment later after we were sure that it wasn't following us any longer.
"Let's not do that again!"
